Dirty Little Secrets in Your Hygiene Routine (That No One Talks About) 😳

Hello, my Lovely People,

Welcome back to Glow with Maghie — your cozy corner for all things skincare, makeup, and lifestyle — where we keep it honest, fuss-free, and packed with only the tips you actually need.

Today, we’re covering some important personal hygiene points.

We all think we’re super clean — bathing every day and taking good care of our hygiene. But how many of us realise that there are certain parts of our body we tend to miss or quickly move past, without even noticing how important they are?

Yes, there are a few areas we easily skip — but they’re just as important to take care of too. Let’s see them one by one.

  1. Ear and Earlobes 👂

Honestly, tell me — when was the last time you washed behind your earlobes?! If it’s been more than three days, then maybe it’s time to rethink your hygiene routine.

We all easily skip this area in our daily routine. When we do makeup or skincare, this place gets ignored. Even when we wash our face in the morning or evening, we tend to miss cleaning it — which we really shouldn’t.

Sweat, dirt, oil, and even dandruff can easily get trapped here. Not taking care of this blind spot can lead to skin irritation, especially since this area is just as delicate as your face and neck. There are also chances of developing irritation or mild infections if it’s not cleaned regularly.

How to do it properly?
It’s simple — just like how you cleanse your face, include this area too. Clean your ears, earlobes, and behind your ears gently.

When doing your skincare, you can apply products like moisturiser and even sunscreen to your ears as well.

Avoid using chemical scrubs or peels on or around your ears. Also, using Q-tips to clean inside your ears is strictly not advisable, as it can damage the delicate tissues inside.

2. Armpits 💪

Ever experienced getting into a closed space like an elevator or public transport, and suddenly you start to smell your own body odour — and become conscious about what others might feel?

You may think we all clean our underarms while bathing, but if you still notice bad odour, it’s usually because sweat gets collected there. Sweat itself isn’t the main reason for the smell — but it creates the perfect breeding ground for bacteria, which causes the odour.

How to do it properly?
The skin in your underarms is delicate, just like your neck. So, avoid using harsh scrubs, as they can make the area worse and even cause pigmentation.

You can use a non-alcoholic antiperspirant on a daily basis. If you still feel the odour isn’t reducing, you can try AHA/BHA-infused underarm roll-ons, which help control it.

You can also exfoliate once a week using a mild scrub.

Avoid using deodorants and perfumes directly on the skin, as they often contain alcohol and may cause irritation.

Switching to cotton fabrics can help keep the area breathable and reduce sweat. Avoid sharing clothes with others, especially items that come in direct contact with your underarms, as odour-causing bacteria can transfer through fabric.

Even when trying on clothes in stores, sweat and bacteria from previous users may linger on the fabric. It’s always a good idea to wash new clothes before wearing them.

Waxing or shaving is a personal preference — just make sure you take proper care of the area.

3. Back of your Neck 🧴

This is one area we almost always forget — especially if you have long hair. How often do you actually clean the back of your neck properly and not just let water run through it?

Throughout the day, this area collects sweat, dust, oil, and even leftover sunscreen. Since it’s usually covered by hair, we don’t really notice it getting dirty.

Most of the time, we focus only on the front of our neck while doing skincare and completely ignore the back — which shouldn’t be the case. Over time, this can lead to dullness, irritation, and even uneven skin tone.

How to do it properly?
While bathing, make sure you gently cleanse the back of your neck just like you do for your face and front neck. Don’t rush through it.

When applying skincare, you can extend your products slightly to the back of your neck too — especially sunscreen if your hair doesn’t fully cover the area. Keeping this area clean might seem like a small step, but it makes a noticeable difference.

4. Navel (Belly Button) 🔘

This is one small area that most of us completely ignore. You think about when was the last time you actually cleaned your navel properly?

It might look clean from the outside, but your navel can easily collect dirt, sweat, lint from clothes, and bacteria over time. Since it’s a small, closed area, all of this can stay trapped without you even realising it.

Many of us just let water run over it while bathing and assume it’s clean — but that’s not always enough. Skipping this area can sometimes lead to bad smell or even minor infections.

How to do it properly?
Keep it simple. While bathing, gently clean your navel with soap and water. You don’t have to scrub harshly — just make sure you’re not ignoring it.

If needed, you can use a soft cotton swab to clean the area gently. Avoid digging deep or using anything sharp, as the skin inside is very delicate.

Also, make sure to dry it properly after bathing, because moisture can lead to bacterial growth.

5. Intimate Area 🔻

This is one topic people don’t talk about much — but it’s honestly one of the most important parts of personal hygiene.

Many of us either ignore proper cleaning or overdo it by using too many products, thinking it will keep the area fresh. But the truth is, this area is very delicate and needs simple, proper care.

One basic habit that should be followed is cleaning with water every time after you urinate or pass stool. It might feel like a small step, but it makes a big difference in maintaining hygiene and preventing infections.

Also, using harsh soaps, body washes, or strongly scented products in this area is not a good idea. These can disturb the natural balance and lead to irritation, dryness, or infections.

In most cases, you don’t need any special intimate wash. Unless there is a specific condition and a doctor has advised it, plain water is more than enough.

How to do it properly?
Keep it simple and gentle. Wash the area with water regularly, especially after using the restroom and while bathing.

Avoid using your regular body soap in this area. Also, don’t scrub harshly — gentle cleaning is more than enough.

Make sure to dry the area properly after washing, as moisture can lead to bacterial or fungal growth.

Wearing clean, breathable fabrics like cotton also helps maintain hygiene throughout the day.

If you’re comfortable, you can sleep without underwear at night to allow the area to breathe and reduce moisture buildup.

Taking care of this area is not complicated — it’s just about being consistent and gentle.

6. Behind your Knees 🦵

This is one of those areas we almost never think about while bathing. Do you actually clean behind your knees properly?

Even though it may not seem important, this area can trap sweat, dirt, and especially because it’s a folded part of the body. We tend to just let water run through and assume it’s clean — but that’s not always enough.

Over time, not cleaning this area properly can lead to sweat buildup, irritation, and even slight odour.

How to do it properly?
While bathing, make sure you gently clean behind your knees just like you do for the rest of your body. Don’t skip it.

You don’t need anything extra — just your regular gentle soap is enough. Avoid harsh scrubbing, as the skin here can be slightly sensitive.

Also, make sure to dry the area properly after bathing, especially in the folds.

7. Toes, Toe nails and between each of them 🦶

This is one of the most missed and easy-going areas when it comes to hygiene. Most of us just rinse our feet quickly and move on.

But in reality, this part of our body carries more dirt and bacteria than we expect. We use our feet all day, wear shoes for long hours, and create sweat and moisture — the perfect environment for bacteria.

The area between the toes can easily trap sweat and lead to bad odour or even fungal infections if not cleaned properly.

How to do it properly?
Clean your feet properly — not just the top, but also between each toe and around your toenails.

Use a gentle soap and clean around the nails if needed.

Most importantly, dry your feet properly, especially between the toes.

Avoid sharing shoes or socks, as this can spread infections.

Bonus

8. Nose & Nostrils 👃

This might sound basic, but it’s something many of us don’t really pay attention to.

Tell me the truth— how often do you actually clean your nostrils properly, instead of just ignoring them until something feels uncomfortable?

Throughout the day, our nose collects dust, dirt, and impurities from the air we breathe. If not cleaned regularly, it can build up and become noticeable — and sometimes even embarrassing, especially in public situations.

Instead of dealing with it randomly during the day, it’s always better to make it a small part of your regular hygiene routine.

How to do it properly?

Keep it simple and gentle. While washing your face or bathing, make sure you clean the outer nostril area properly with water.

You don’t need to go deep or use anything harsh — just maintaining basic cleanliness is enough.

If you have visible nose hair, avoid removing it completely. Nose hair actually helps filter dust and protect your airways. Instead, you can trim it neatly to keep the area clean and presentable.

Making this a regular habit helps you stay fresh and confident, without those awkward moments where you feel the need to keep adjusting or touching your nose in public. It’s a small step, but it makes a difference in your overall hygiene and comfort.

9. Oral Hygiene (Teeth, Tongue & Breath) 😁

This is something we all do daily — but are we really doing it properly?

Brushing your teeth alone doesn’t mean your oral hygiene is complete. There are a few small things we tend to ignore, which can lead to bad breath and other issues without us even realising it.

Food particles, bacteria, and plaque can build up not just on your teeth, but also on your tongue and around your gums. If the tongue is not cleaned properly, it can be one of the main reasons for bad breath.

Even the tonsil area can sometimes trap small particles, which may cause an unpleasant smell if not taken care of.

How to do it properly?

Brush your teeth at least twice a day and don’t rush through it. Make sure you’re cleaning all sides of your teeth properly.

Don’t skip cleaning your tongue. You can use a tongue cleaner or your toothbrush gently to remove the buildup. This one step alone can make a big difference in fresh breath.

Rinsing your mouth after every meal is a simple habit that helps prevent buildup and keeps your mouth clean throughout the day.

Stay hydrated, because dryness in the mouth can also lead to bad breath.

If you notice persistent bad breath even after maintaining hygiene, it’s better to get it checked, as it could be related to oral health or tonsil issues.

Taking care of your oral hygiene is not just about a bright smile — it also helps you feel more confident when you speak and interact with others.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, hygiene isn’t about doing something extra or complicated — it’s about not missing the small things that actually matter.

Most of these areas are easy to clean, but we tend to ignore them simply because we don’t notice them every day. And honestly, once you become aware of it, it hardly takes a few extra minutes to take care of them properly.

It’s not about being perfect — it’s about being a little more mindful with your routine.

Because feeling truly clean isn’t just about how you look, but also how confident and comfortable you feel in your own body. ✨

So next time you step into the shower, don’t rush — take that extra minute. Your body will thank you for it 🤍
