Simple Mistakes in Regular Life that Cause Acne: You need to Know!

Hey, my Lovely People!!!

Welcome to Glow with Maghie — your go-to space for all things skincare and makeup. Here, we keep it simple, real, and focused on the essentials you actually need to know.

And today we are covering the topic of (drumroll!!!!!) Acne and Pimples.
Acne! Pimples! Let us talk about a few mistakes or behaviors we often do that might actually be causing acne.

Am I the right person to speak about that? Yes.
Did I face that phase of my life? Hell yes!
It’s not like I got my acne when I hit puberty — I dealt with adult acne!!! Which is far more chaotic than the puberty phase.

I’m not here to explain my story of acne — that will be covered in another blog: My Acne Journey and How I Cleared It.

Disclaimer: I’m not a skincare expert or a science-based professional to speak about acne and pimples in depth, but I can share a few things we do in our regular, normal life that can cause pimples on our face and body — and how to avoid those to take better care. This applies to both males and females.

So, let’s dive into the topic quickly!

1. Treating your Face and Body Skin the Same

Yes, as we all know by now (thanks to social media influence and knowledge sharing), our face skin — which includes the face and neck — is more delicate and softer compared to our body skin. So, we have to treat them differently.

Avoid using the same cleanser for both face and body. Often, I see men’s products where they incorporate all three uses in a single bottle (hair, face, and body). No — it’s not effective if you have any targeted concern. Always have separate products for body wash and face wash.

2. Cleanliness is Key – Sharing is Not Caring in This Case

I seriously wonder how to start this topic. We have to keep our things separate and avoid sharing personal care products. Living in the same house, hostel, or in a PG, we tend to share cleansers or soap (though I personally don’t prefer soap for the face, even if it claims to have moisturizing properties) with our parents, siblings, friends, or even partners.

But here’s the thing — every person’s skin is different, and if someone in your home is dealing with acne or pimples, you might start experiencing breakouts too by sharing their products. That’s because bacteria and oil can transfer from one person to another through shared items.

Now, that doesn’t mean you have to get a whole new shelf of skincare for everyone. Just go for contamination-free packaging (like pumps or tubes) when buying face wash and body wash — it keeps things clean, safe, and personal.

3. Clothes Are Also Culprits Here

Yup, you have to keep your clothes clean — from your towels and handkerchiefs to your bedspread and pillowcase. Always have your own towel and a separate cloth for your face. Sharing these or not washing them regularly can cause breakouts.

Change your bedspread and pillowcase at least once a week, especially if you have dandruff or a dry scalp — both can transfer bacteria and oils to your skin while you sleep. We mostly forget to dust off the bed before going to sleep, and trust me, that can be another sneaky reason for skin issues.

4. Change the way you cleanse

Always use a separate, mild cleanser for your face — don’t use harsh soaps or body washes meant for your body. Cleansing your face twice a day is usually enough if you have a normal daily routine.

But if you work out, travel a lot, or do any activity that makes you sweat, cleanse your face and body immediately after — never let sweat sit on your skin for too long. It can clog pores and lead to breakouts.

While bathing, follow the usual top-to-bottom method — start from your head and end at your feet. This helps prevent body and back acne, especially if you use hair products that may run down your back. If you have dandruff or a dry scalp, you can also try the reverse hair wash method (conditioner first, then shampoo), whichever works best for you.

5. Do not Touch

You know what I’m going to say — do not touch your face often! It can transfer bacteria and dirt from your hands or surroundings straight onto your skin. If you have small breakouts, never ever try to pop them. It’s only going to aggravate the pimples, and you’ll end up getting more and more.

Popping pimples can also leave dark spots or scars on your face — and those can be tough to reverse.

Also, never shave your face if you have active pimples. It can irritate the skin more, spread bacteria, and even cause cuts or infection.

6. Thanks, No Thanks

Say no to DIY face masks, scrubs, or cleansers using raw ingredients directly on your face. Just don’t.

The internet is full of DIY hacks telling you to use coffee grounds, lemon juice, garlic, baking soda, or even toothpaste for instant results. It’s a big myth, and trust me — you’re going to suffer more than you ever thought.

Keep it simple. Your skin deserves better than kitchen experiments.

7. Makeup, huh!

Double cleanse. PERIOD.
Start with an oil-based cleanser, or even baby oil or coconut oil (don’t worry about pore clogging — we’re going to follow up with a second cleanser anyway). Then, use a mild cleanser that suits yourskin type to complete the job.

Also, keep your makeup products clean and sanitized. Wash your tools regularly — yes, those brushes and sponges! We often forget, but they’re a breeding ground for bacteria if not cleaned.

And here’s one thing that honestly bugs me — I’ve seen influencers blow on their makeup brushes or directly on makeup products to remove excess. Please, don’t do that! It’s a big NO-NO — you’re literally blowing bacteria onto your tools and shoving them onto your face.

8. Eating Habits

Eat clean and healthy food. Occasionally having fast food is fine — we all crave it — but having it regularly is not advisable. Try to avoid oily, fried, and overly processed foods as much as you can.

HYDRATE yourself, buddy!
Drink enough water — or go for juices (still fruits over juice), detox water, coconut water, anything that keeps your body refreshed and skin hydrated. We have so many fun and energetic recipes available online, so staying healthy doesn’t have to be boring.

9. Create Your Skincare

Yes, my buds — you should have your own skincare and body care routine. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a man or a woman — skincare is for everyone.

Even something as basic as a mild cleanser, moisturizer, and SPF (aka CMS) is a great start. If you’d like to go a little extra and add products between these steps — go for it, but make sure they suit your skin type and concerns.

10. Seek Help!!

If you’re facing severe acne or frequent breakouts, please never wait or hesitate to get medical help. That’s something I’ll always suggest without second thoughts.

Even if you’re following all the above-mentioned tips properly, acne can still happen — and that might be your body’s way of telling you something’s going on internally. Your skin could be asking for deeper care, and in that case, a dermatologist is your best friend.

For occasional breakouts, pimple patches can be a real lifesaver! They help protect the spot from bacteria, reduce inflammation, and stop you from touching or picking it (you know we all do it!). Look for patches with salicylic acid or hydrocolloid — they work well overnight and are safe to use even on sensitive skin.

💬Final Thoughts

Yes, that’s all I’ve come up with for today’s blog! These are some of the daily habits we do without even realizing they could be small causes for pimples.

I know, I know — some parts were a bit lengthy 😅, but I really wanted to spill the details in depth to make it worth your read!

Let me know in the comments — do you prefer these detailed blogs or would you like something short and straight to the point next time?

Until then, catch you later, Buds!!! Stay clear, stay glowing! 💫
