How to Stay Fresh in Summer: Hygiene Tips You Shouldn’t Skip

Hello my Lovely People,

Welcome to Glow with Maghie — where we cover the basics of skincare and makeup, starting with what you actually need to know.

Lines for the day!

“Summer! Summer! 🌞😎 Grab your cool drinks, people — both for your skin and your body.

Summer is around the corner, and the sun has started to spread its love (a.k.a. heat!) all over, so we need to take intentional care of ourselves.”

With that saying let’s break some summer hygiene with its dos and don’ts, shall we!

Hydration:

As we all know by now, hydrating the body — both internally and externally — is extremely important during summer. It’s not that we can only rely on water as a source of hydration. Keep water as your regular go-to, but try adding seasonal fruits to your system too — tender coconut, watermelon, muskmelon, guava, etc.

Limit juice, eat fruits instead. And watch your portion sizes — too much of even good things just gets flushed out.

Skincare:

You should create your skincare routine based on the season too. Not all products that work well in winter will suit you in summer. During summer, try to use water-based skincare products.

Choose accordingly; no need to worry about switching products often — our summers likely last three to five months, so these will not burn your pockets.

Also, wherever you go, carry a small facial mist — it will refresh you whenever needed. And finally, after your skincare routine, never ever skip your SPF. Preferably, use sunblock — it helps prevent tanning and protects your skin.

Bathing:

During summer, we need to bathe at least twice daily. I suggest bathing twice — not just for you, but for everyone around you too.

When you go out for school, college, work, or the gym, you tend to carry pollution, dirt, and sweat. Also, your body temperature rises with the outside heat, and you need to cool down. So bathing twice is advisable throughout the year, and in summer, it’s a must. No skipping!

Body care:

We should also care a little bit about our bodies too. Compared to skincare, we often ignore body care.

We should avoid sharing personal items like towels, soaps, and razors — just to make sure we stay safe and keep others safe too.

As we sweat a lot in summer, try using perfumes and body mists to save yourself from social embarrassment. Layer perfumes with body wash and lotion with similar notes — this will help the scent last longer.

Use sweat pads for your underarms; they’ll help absorb sweat, control odour, and avoid discolouring your favourite white clothes.Foot care is also important. Yes, even between your toes — especially if you wear shoes and socks regularly. Please clean them to avoid stink and infections.

Hair care:

Like body cleansing, cleaning your hair regularly is important too. Washing your hair helps reduce sweat and oil buildup, especially in summer.

Try to cleanse your hair three times a week — or daily, if that suits you better. The oil and sweat from our scalp increase in summer and attract dirt and pollutants. It can lead to scalp buildup or dandruff.

So treat your hair with mild shampoo, conditioner, and a hydrating mask. Tip: If you can’t skip oiling your hair, oil it the night before or at least an hour or two before your hair wash.

Wardrobe:

Try wearing breathable clothes. Pick lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton and linen to help reduce sweat and prevent body odour.

Avoid tight-fitting clothes that can trap sweat and bacteria against your skin — they can cause skin damage, fungal infections, or body acne.

Laundry:

We all have — or have had — this habit: throwing used clothes wherever we take them off. (Cough bed, cough sofa, even on chairs 😒). STOP contaminating the living space, people. Don’t make every place moist with your sweat.

If not already, use laundry bags or baskets — or even throw them directly into the washing machine. NEVER repeat already-worn clothes for two or three days without washing. Don’t make others think you stink like a pig.

A quick tip: for the inner garments which I follow from my teenage years is, I never mix my inner garments with our regular clothes. Before bathing, I wash them separately and sun-dry or shade-dry them. One, you can increase the lifespan of your inner garments if you take exclusive care, and two, You don’t mix things with your regular clothes (you know what I mean 😉). Keep it Clean, people.

Summary

To summarize the above story time, I have listed below for quick reference and better understanding.

  1. Always stay hydrated 🫗 both internally and externally throughout the Summer.
  2. Choose the skincare products that will suit in summer, and SPF for skin and body is important.
  3. If you are a makeup lover, try to avoid heavy makeup; it may cake up, trap sweat, and lead to acne. Better focus on skincare than makeup.
  4. Bathe 🚿🛁 twice daily just to keep you refreshed and stay put from bacteria and infection.
  5. As much as you like to care for facial skin, your body skin needs love too; treat and hydrate them.
  6. Remember your armpits, genitals, behind your earlobes, knee bends, and toes can also trap sweat and dirt behind them; clean them properly.
  7. 🙅 Try not to share your personal hygiene products with others; either of you can damage and spread infections or bacteria to one another.
  8. Hair becomes so much damaged in this humid situation 💇‍♀️, please use mild and gentle shampoo, conditioner, and a hydrating mask.
  9. Keep your clothes clean and try to use breathable dress throughout summer.
  10. While traveling, try to use a scarf, sunglasses, hat, and gloves to get protected from the sun and outside pollutions.
  11. Finally, please carry a perfume with you, if body odour 🤢 is your summer enemy, and additionally, use mints or mouth refreshers all the time.

That’s the end of today’s topic! 💬

If you people have other tips about summer hygiene that I haven’t covered, feel free to share them in the comments — your thoughts might help someone else too!
