Beginner’s Skincare Routine – A Simple Guide for Anyone Starting Out

Hey Lovely People!!

Welcome to Glow with Maghie — where we cover the basics of skincare and makeup, starting with what you actually need to know. Today, Let’s talk about the basics of skincare in a way that’s real, relatable, and refreshingly simple — for people who just want to feel confident and glow naturally. Let’s break skincare down into simple steps and clear up some common doubts.

Disclaimer: I’m not a skincare expert or a science-based professional. But I’m here to share my personal experiences and help you build a simple skincare routine that works for you. (FYI — skincare is for anyone with skin, regardless of gender. My husband and I both follow skincare routines religiously! 😊)

🧴 What is Skincare in Simple Terms?

From my perspective, skincare is a practice — a set of steps or habits we follow to care for our skin and keep it healthy, beyond just our diet or using random products. It’s something we do long-term, to help our skin look and feel its best — regardless of age or gender.

Skincare is a journey, not a quick fix.
You might wonder: If someone starts skincare in their early twenties and follows it religiously, will they have good skin in their forties or sixties? The answer is: maybe — it depends on consistency and external factors like lifestyle, environment, and genetics.

Let’s be real — aging is natural. I won’t promise skincare will reverse aging, but it can slow it down and keep your skin healthier through the years.

🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Who and When to Start Skincare?

Let’s break this down into two parts — Who should start skincare, and when.

Who?
Everyone. All humans, regardless of gender, can and should take care of their skin. Skincare and makeup are not just for women — they’re for anyone who values personal care.

When?
This can vary for each person. Some people start in their late teens, others in their early twenties. Personally, I believe you can start whenever you’re ready — even from your late teens, depending on your skin’s needs. Start with the basics and gradually introduce actives as your skin adjusts.

🛠️ Create Your Own Skincare Routine

Yes! Just like our outfits, skincare should be personalized — tailored to your skin type and lifestyle. I break skincare down by life stages:

👧 Teens & Late Teens

At this stage, your skin is usually at its best — radiant and youthful. Unless you’re dealing with acne or breakouts, there’s no need to overdo it. Focus on:

  • Mild face wash
  • Light moisturizer
  • SPF
  • Lots of hydration
If acne persists, consult a dermatologist.

👩‍🦱 Twenties

Now is the time to introduce active ingredients gradually:

  • Vitamin C, Niacinamide, Hyaluronic Acid (start in mild concentrations)
  • Mild exfoliating acids: AHA, BHA, PHA (1–2 times a week)
  • Brightening actives: Kojic Acid, Alpha Arbutin (for pigmentation/dullness)
  • Barrier repair: Ceramides, Peptides

👩‍🦳 Thirties & Beyond

Continue your routine and add anti-aging ingredients:

  • Collagen masks, Retinol, Tretinoin (under medical guidance)
Every skin is different, so do your research or speak with a professional before jumping into actives. And don’t fall for every product out there — we’ve all made that mistake!

🪞 Skincare Steps

Once you’ve understood your skin’s needs, you can build a routine from 3 to 10 steps. Always have a morning and evening routine, and layer your products from thinnest to thickest consistency so they absorb properly.

Here’s a sample order of application:

  • Cleansing oil (PM – if you wore SPF or makeup)
  • Face wash
  • Exfoliating peel or mask (1–2x/week)
  • Toner
  • Essence
  • Ampoule
  • Serum (face + eye)
  • Moisturizer
  • SPF (AM) / Facial oil (PM)

Toners are watery and absorb fast. Essences and ampoules are lightweight but slightly thicker. Then come serums, moisturizers, and oils — to seal everything in.

💬 Conclusion

You don’t need to use every product mentioned above. Skincare is subjective and should be adjusted to fit your skin’s needs. Take what works for you, leave the rest.

I hope this post helps you build a routine that feels right.
Let’s meet again in another topic. Until then — take care, my buds!
